We've Held Off on This as Long as We Could
For the first time in nine years, Malibu Film Society is adjusting its annual membership pricing. For those of you who've never signed up before (or whose memberships have lapsed), this is an opportunity to join/rejoin MFS -- before prices go up at the end of the month.
Over the past decade, our annual slate has jumped by almost 50% -- from the 54 events we did back in 2016 to just under 80 in each of the past two years. Almost all of this growth has come directly from increased industry support for our Awards Season Screening Series (which now includes most of the nominees and almost every one of the Oscar winners in all 23 categories).
In the past 12 months alone, we've also significantly expanded the number of events held here in Malibu (such as our Dinner & a Movie nights at Ollo and the Special Event Series at City Hall). All this has been done without any major underwriting, and it's just the start: our ongoing efforts to bring movies back to the big screen in Malibu should be on the City Council agenda soon!
Unfortunately, all of these efforts (combined with steadily rising expenses) present fiscal challenges that we now have to address. To help us continue providing high-quality programming, major improvements (like better Q&A audio and our upcoming launch of an advanced website, including new tools like carpool networking), annual fees will increase by $50 per person starting July 1:
• Individual Memberships (currently at $250) will be increased to $300.
• Couples' Memberships will go from $450 to $550.
• Film Industry Upgrades (to convert Awards Season-only to full annual memberships) will go to $150.
